Colposcopy for Evaluation of Cervical Dysplasia

Services • Onsite Surgery

Colposcopy is a procedure designed to evaluate abnormal pap smear results by examining the cervix under magnification.

How It Works:

  • Patient lies on her back and places legs in stirrups;
  • Acetic acid is placed on the cervix;
  • Physician will use a colposcope (a large electric microscope that is positioned approximately 30 cm from the vagina) to view the cervix;
  • The gynecologist focuses on the areas of the cervix where light does not pass through;
  • Abnormal cervical changes are seen as white areas – the whiter the area, the worse the cervical dysplasia
  • Tissue samples are taken from the whitest abnormal areas and sent to the lab for further evaluation

Purpose:

Allows Dr. Bhatia to take guided biopsies of moderately to severe abnormal areas and eliminate concerns over any abnormal pap smear results.

Patient Requirements:

All patients that have had pap smears with any abnormal results are available.

Recovery:

Patients may return to regular activities the day of the procedure.
