Ovarian Cysts and Masses

Ovarian cysts are common for women during childbearing years. They develop as a result of hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Most ovarian cysts are benign, but these cysts still have the potential to bleed, rupture, or twist. Any of these three conditions can result in pain or discomfort.

There are several types of ovarian cysts:

• Functional cysts – most common during ovulation. (minor symptoms)
• Dermoid cysts – comprised of fat, teeth, skin, and hair. (asymptomatic or moderate symptoms)
• Cystadenomas – Develop from cells on the outside of the ovary. (moderate to severe symptoms)
• Endometriomas – When tissue from the uterus grows on the ovaries resulting in large, bleeding cysts and pelvic pain. (moderate to severe symptoms)
• Polycystic cysts – Could be related to polycystic ovarian dyndrome and occurs primary in women who do not ovulate regularly.

Symptoms of Cysts:

Pain as a result of internal bleeding and pressure on the surrounding organs.

Endometriosis

Same as Endometriomas.

Fibroids

Largely benign growths from the muscle of the uterus resulting in abnormal bleeding and pain. Occur in about 25% of women, mostly among women between 30-40. More prevalent in African-Americans.

Symptoms of Fibroids:

1. Heavier, longer, more painful periods;
2. Pain in the pelvis, abdomen, or lower back;
3. Bleeding outside the normal period of menstruation;
4. Pressure symptoms – trouble with urination, rectal pain, cramping;
5. Miscarriages and infertility
