Outpatient Procedures

Services • Hospital Procedures

Outpatient procedures are often referred to as “same day surgery,” because discharge to home immediately follows the surgery in a surgery center or hospital.

Urinary Incontinence Surgeries

General Overview:

  • Designed to lift a prolapsed bladder and strengthen the pelvic floor to prevent continued leakage of urine, especially that induced by coughing, sneezing, or movement.
  • Procedures include transvaginal tapes, transobturator tapes, and various bladder suspensions using mesh.

How It Works:

  • A small incision or incisions will be made in the vagina, the abdomen, or where the top of your thigh meets your pelvic area.
  • The mesh is threaded through the incision and positioned under the urethra to form a cradle of support.
  • The mesh allows your body tissues to grow into it, providing support to your urethra and securing the mesh in place.
  • The procedures takes less than thirty minutes, requires a small vaginal incision, and involves little to no recovery time.
  • 9 out of 10 women report decreased incontinence after the procedure.

Patient Requirements:

  • Patient with periodic urinary leakage prompted by movements, sneezing, or coughing.

Recovery:

  • Most patients resume normal activities one to two days after the procedure.

Laparoscopic Adenexal Surgery

General Overview:

  • Pelvic pain can sometimes be caused by ovarian/tubal cysts or other abnormal pathology. Dr. Bhatia uses this surgery as a minimally invasive technique to remove pathologic ovarian cysts, ovaries, or tubes.

How It Works:

  • A camera is introduced through the belly button to visualize the abnormal structures.
  • Then, the structures are removed by laser or other coagulating methods.
  • The specimen is removed through a secondary incision.

Patient Requirements:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal ovarian enlargements

Recovery:

  • Dr. Bhatia does prescribe mild pain relievers on a case-to-case basis.
  • Most patients resume normal activities one week after the procedure.

Vaginal Reconstruction

General Overview:

  • Vaginal childbirth or, simply, aging can cause weakening of the vaginal tissue causing prolapse and vaginal discomfort. Dr. Bhatia offers vaginal reconstruction to reposition vaginal tissue into the proper anatomic location and improve overall structural satisfaction.

How It Works:

First Option: Advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures

  • Prolapse repair surgery returns prolapsed organs to a more normal anatomical position and strengthens structures around your vagina to maintain support and suspension of organs.
  • Many women are turning to new, advanced minimally invasive treatment options because they:
    • Minimize tissue trauma
    • Restore normal anatomy with a faster recovery than traditional open abdominal prolapse surgery options
    • Minimize pain compared to more invasive procedures

Second Option: Surgical Mesh

  • Typically, these minimally invasive prolapse treatment procedures take place on an in-patient basis and are performed under general anesthesia. Minimally invasive mesh repair procedures generally follow these steps:
    • A vaginal incision and a few small skin incisions are made. You may either have an incision at the crease where your upper thigh meets your buttocks or in the middle of your buttocks on both sides.
    • The mesh is inserted through an incision, placed in the body, secured with stitches, and the incisions are closed.
  • The use of mesh in surgical procedures is not new, and is commonly used. Mesh used for vaginal prolapse surgery is light, soft, porous, and pliable, allowing your own body’s tissues to grow in and around it. Once placed, you should not feel the mesh inside you.

Patient Requirements:

  • Patients with a history of multiple vaginal deliveries.
  • Pelvic discomfort
  • Occasional reduced satisfaction during intercourse

Recovery:

  • Dr. Bhatia does prescribe mild pain relievers on a case-to-case basis.
  • Most patients resume normal activities one week after the procedure.
